About Beechmount

Beechmount is situated in Chelston, a pleasant residential suburb of Torquay which started as the Saxon hamlet of Torre (from ‘tor’ meaning hill or craggy peak). The monks of Torre Abbey are credited with building the first fishing quay, hence the name Torquay. Chelston itself was part of a nearby private family estate until 1900 when it was annexed by Torquay. Chelston featured in the D-day preparations, as American troops were stationed there, and German bombing raids were carried out on Chelston immediately prior to the D-day landings on May 29th, 1944. Today, as well as a good range of shops and facilities on the doorstep in Chelston, Torquay has all the facilities one could require, ranging from shops to a library, churches, banks and good medical services. The city of Exeter, with its mainline railway, is only a few miles away and the town is close to the M5 motorway.
